She had worked for our company for 27 years and her decision was not made lightly. I am not sure who cried more the day she left (she was the best boss you could ask for) but we know she is going to do great in her new adventure. She was not only my boss but is a dear friend and a fabulous dresser. She has always been so supportive of my tatting I thought I would make her something to wish her much success.
I like the pattern I used for the Seahorse so I combined it with chain to make the main necklace piece. Then I decided that it needed a "wow" factor so I continued the pattern all the way around to make what I call the "Grand Daisy". I also made some earrings to match. I was a little worried as it seemed to be such a large piece but it was the perfect size when she put it on. We'll miss working with her but she is only a call or text away! And of course we have promised to meet up to go shopping her favorite past time LOL!
I love visiting this island. It's located in the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia's Middle Peninsula in Mathews County. The island is connected to the mainland by a swing bridge that is fully operational. On the island itself is a very nice museum you can visit where you can view artifacts that evidence that the island has been inhabited as early as ten thousand years ago as well as ancient sea fossils that are really fascinating. But the most wonderful part of the museum is the exhibit of tatted lace done by the ladies who lived on the island. Some of the lace has to be done in hundred weight thread as it is so fine. I believe the oldest piece I saw dated back to the late 1860's. They even have some of the tatting shuttles on display. It's so wonderful to be able to see that they have preserved the lace and clothing that it is sewn on. I know we have all read the history about where tatting came from but after seeing this exhibit you come away with the sense that lace really did develop out of small fishing villages. A good friend of mine from work lives on the island. Her husband is an "Islander" so she makes the hour and a half trek to work everyday. I remember back when her husband was earning his living as a fisherman, sometimes he would come into "town" and stop by the office. He was fascinated to see me tat during lunch and would say how does she know how to do that? She's using a similar technique to making nets! He told me I could come down to the island and help them repair the fish nets one day. Alas I never got the chance but I remember when my friend would tell me how they would spread the nets out in the field across from their house and the men would all be out there repairing them. There are so many regulations for fishing now that the poor guys have a hard time making a living and hence why her husband found other employment and I never got to try my hand at repairing nets.
I used to think she was crazy driving so far but after visiting there twice now I can see why they would never want to leave. I can't wait to go!
For the festival I decided to make some pieces that tie to the sea and summer. I am thinking about calling this collection Mermaid Folly. The seahorse is made with one shuttle and the earrings are done in my Ice Blue pattern but this time I used lentil beads.
All the trees and plants are in bloom. Everything is just beautiful! We had some serious thunderstorms last night but this morning the sun is shining and all the pollen has washed away.
When I woke this morning I looked over at my nightstand and saw these three things sitting there and thought that would make a nice photo for the blog. I love the combination of the perfume bottle, old lace and necklace. So French! Made me think of that song I love Paris in the Springtime. This is the pattern Lacy Treasure Pendant and it comes from Marilee Rockley's Tatted Jewelry book. I love this little pattern. This one is Lizbeth Silver paired with a muted ribbon rose and some crystal flower findings. Since it struck me as French in style I added a French crystal chain to it as well. This is one of my favorite necklaces to wear.
Make it of course! This is a favorite pattern of mine. Today I decided to extend the pattern upward with the rope connecting it at the top of the ring of the pendant creating a heart within the heart. These are done in Lizbeth Christmas Red Size 20.
Sounds like music doesn't it? Found these lovely rose connectors at the store the other day. Thought I should make a pendant or set of earrings so started playing with some ideas. What do you think? I like them both for different reasons. I may try thread size 10 and see what results I get with that as well. The longer one measures two inches and the shorter about 1 1/2 inches. The longer one would definitely make a statement and the shorter would do for everyday wear. May add a jump ring and bead to the bottom of the shorter one and see if I like it. These are just a workup so thinking it may need some beads now.
Over the last few months I have been keeping busy, working, getting ready for Christmas and oh teaching too! I would like to introduce the ladies. I am calling us the Panera Bread Tatters! Members- Sandy, Marlene, Winnie (Marlene's MIL), Judy and Chris. Yes, as you have guessed we meet at Panera bread once a month. Tatting is on their "bucket list" of items they would like to accomplish. These ladies are doing great. All began with the shuttle, slow going for most except for Chris. I keep asking her if she has tatted before. The first day I showed her the ds and off she went like she had been tatting for years. We had to take a little break for the holiday so I encourage everyone to take a look at 25 Motif and other sites as well as tutorials on UTube while we were on break. Sandy decided that needle tatting was better for her and has gotten Judy hooked as well. Both made several bookmarks for Christmas presents and had some for show and tell. Judy is still determined to do shuttle but is taking a break and enjoying needle. Marlene had some trouble with the shuttle so Judy showed her needle which is working very well for her now. Chris came to class with beautiful necklaces to show us! She has really done well with the shuttle and is already doing split rings! She also bought some books over the holiday, one of which I almost stole from her, Marilee's (Annie's Attic) book. So I came home went on Etsy and bought my own. Love, love, love her designs! I am going to have to start learning new techniques so I can keep ahead of Chris (wink wink). Winnie also tried her hand at needle tatting as well! She is an avid knitter and always brings that to work on during our meetings so I was so thrilled to see she wanted to try needle. She did great! So we'll try a little bit each time. Maybe she will teach me to knit! I can do basic but would like to do knitted lace! These ladies are such a nice group and I am so happy that they are having fun.
I found this finding at Hobby Lobby a few months ago and decided it would make a great piece as a necklace. Since it already had the jet beads I decided to carry it through the motif. I think next time I will use larger seed beads as they seemed a little small once I finished it. I'm pretty please with it overall. One of the movie theatres here is going to have a showing of part one of season 3 and all are encouraged to dress accordingly so I think this necklace will be appropriate. I'm calling this one Downton Revisited.
I've been so busy enjoying other people's blogs I have neglected my own so thought it would be time to share something new. Don't you love the great metal findings that are coming out in the stores now? For years I have been incorporating lots of them in with my tatting. Some work great and some well let's just say I attempted to create something with them but need more time to figure out exactly what they are going to be. Then there are others like this butterfly that just turn out with hardly any effort at all. Actually, that isn't true but it did work up easier than most! This one is done in Lizbeth, Size 20 Vineyard Harvest. If you have worked with this thread then you probably know what I figured out when doing this necklace.

It matters which way you use the thread! (I'll explain more below.)

I am a two shuttle kind of girl. If I am working chains I usually have the thread on a shuttle. I wind my main shuttle from the ball then wind another shuttle that I am going to use to work chains from the first shuttle. Well for this project I guess I thought that I was going to need more chain thread than shuttle thread so I used the second shuttle as the one to make the rings. I decided the start in the green section of the thread because it is the shortest color and it wasn't too far to the tip of the butterfly wing. It worked perfectly as the hot pink in the thread began at the point. I was very pleased and finished up the one side. The realized hmmm I am going to need to do the mirror image of this. So I took my empty shuttle and filled it from what I used as the "chain" shuttle which was the thread that came directly from the ball. Had to flip the butterfly over and work from the back side, but it worked.

A couple a weeks later a friend of mine had asked if I would make her one and I said sure. So I sat down to wind shuttles but had forgotten that I had done the swap and it wasn't working. The colors were coming out all wrong. I thought "Now wait a minute I know I used this thread, what is going on?" It was until then that I realized "oh I reversed the thread." just by switching the shuttles the thread order was changed. So I loaded the shuttles as before and everything worked out. So the next time you work with multicolor try tatting it both ways to see which you prefer. Of course only those of us who tat will have an appreciation of all the thought that goes into making something like this. For those who see the end result think "what a pretty thing."

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-1628856621894472682011-01-29T12:12:00.007-05:002011-01-29T12:44:26.410-05:00Is it Spring yet?

Usually I am ok with Winter but this year I've found myself wishing for Spring more than I ever have in my life! I'm sitting here in a full wool sweater with many layers beneath and wearing a real honest to goodness pair of shear ling slippers and I am still cold! I guess it could be worse I could be sweating to death (yeah that's coming in the summer!lol).

So to help me get through this cold I've been tatting a flurry of earrings to keep my hands moving and warm.

All threads are Lizbeth size 20. Colors used: Caribbean Blue, Navy, Spring Garden and Olive.

The Spring Garden, Navy and Olive pairs are my own design. The Caribbean Blue pair is a pattern I have had for years but I don't remember where I found it. I've made my own tweaks to it over the years and it seems to work well as an earring pattern. I used to make several and connect them together to make a necklace. Maybe that will be next. Stay warm everybody! Only a couple more months of cold!

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-18883751444409288102010-10-09T07:17:00.005-05:002010-10-09T07:37:23.843-05:00Ready for the Folk Festival !This is the fifth year that our city has sponsored the folk festival. The first three years were sponsored by the National Folk Festival and then the city took it on from there. Richmond has done a great job in continuing this fun event. I decided that I would create something to wear on this occasion so I was sitting at lunch on Thursday fiddling around with some thread and came up with this earring. It's your basic smaller ring larger ring with chains in between and then I added the three chains at the top. I think I may do another version with a larger bead at the bottom but that will have to wait for another day. These earring have been created using Vineyard Harvest (Lizbeth thread) and seed beads (Blue Moon).

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-13347137101532857442010-10-06T19:34:00.003-05:002010-10-06T20:18:50.256-05:00Are you still out there? You would think after looking at the last post on this blog that I have neglected it, and you would be right. Good Grief!

So many things to do and not enough time to do it in. Now let's see what was I doing the last time I was on here? Oh yes, making the cord for Romanian point lace. I really enjoyed doing this. I have the cord made and now need to sew it to the pattern. I have yards of it! The larger crochet thread was easy to learn on then I decided to move on down to size 20 and crochet hook size 12. I used to love to crochet but had to stop a few years back because it hurt my thumb. A good friend who knits said work for about 5 mins then rest 2 mins. I can say this really does work. I find it gives my hand enough time to loosen up before beginning again. So as soon as I have the cord sewn to the pattern I will be able to scan it and show you.

All this time away does not mean I have not been tatting. I've been working on items all summer. Here is a necklace that I made using Lizbeth thread, silver beads and raw turquoise.
I hope to post some more pictures soon but I must be off to bed. Big day tomorrow at work so need to get plenty of rest. If you are still out there thanks for stopping by! For years I have wanted to learn how to do Romanian Point Lace. Of course I didn't know anyone who could teach me so it got put on the back burner. (Boy! that burner needs a bigger pot these days). Well I was looking through a Nordic Needle catalog and saw that they had a book for beginners. It is called Romanian Point Lace (A Course for Beginners) by Sylvia Murariu.

This book has some great beginner patterns. I am not good at learning technique's from a book so I searched online to see if anyone had posted a tutorial on making the cord required for the foundation of the lace. I found one by Sunshines Creations. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sunshinescreations/2653581610

Within 10 minutes I was making the cord! Now it takes yards of this cord to do a small pattern so I am busy working on it and hope to have something to show soon!Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-70850872206137771912010-01-17T10:37:00.003-05:002010-01-17T10:51:02.203-05:00Tatting Present for My Sister
It is a dreary, raining and cold morning here. I am getting ready to make a cup of tea and start tatting since it is a long weekend and the laundry can wait until tomorrow as it is a holiday! But then I remembered I had a picture to post. January 2nd was my middle sister's birthday. Ever since she was little she loved the color purple. So for her birthday I decided I would make her a pair of tatted earrings and necklace using metal rings. I made them from Altin Baskin thread was a rich purple almost blue color. I wasn't sure if the necklace was going to turn out well but I have to say I am pretty happy with it. I think my sister was very happy with it too as she put in on as soon as it was unwrapped.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-7255680906176535552010-01-02T10:45:00.002-05:002010-01-02T11:37:59.515-05:00Happy New Year!Happy New Year to everyone! May this year bring you much happiness and good fortune!

Here's a little story that you might have a laugh over. New Year's Eve the company I am working for let us leave early to begin our celebrating. I decided to run over to JoAnn's fabric store (yes this is how I began my celebrating and I knew I would need something to work on to keep me awake until the ungodly hour of midnight awaiting the dropping of the ball in Times Square). I thought I had a coupon for this week's sale but alas I had left it on the kitchen counter with all my others. I decided to go anyway knowing they had jewelry making supplies on sale and I needed a few more. I got to the store thinking I was going to be the only crazy person in there but found it was quite busy. What a great sign for our economy! After my perusal of the various jewelry supplies and finding some good deals, something kept drawing me back to the yarn and crochet aisles. I need a skein winder but really thought "No I don't think they carry these in the store but I'll look anyway." Finding none and not really surprised about it I decided to look around to see if they had any DMC thread or anything for tatting. I have basically given up finding good thread and therefore have been dyeing my own hence the search for the skein winder. I got to the last aisle turn the corner thinking its time to go and thinking "you know there is nothing good on this aisle anyway why torture yourself by walking past that bad thread!" Suddenly without warning my eyes fall upon the end cap, and hanging there as if they had been there the entire time, a display of .....
LIZBETH THREAD!!!!!!!!!!
I thought please someone be near to catch me as I fall out on the floor from shock! I stood there for a full ten minutes wondering if I were dreaming. It was in fact the very same thread from Handy Hands hanging right there. They only had 12 colors, but a wonderful 12 colors they turned out to be! They had Caribbean Blue, Jelly Bean, and two other variegated plus some solids. How many balls to buy???
Well I bought about ten. Why, one would wonder? Because if you don't and that thread just sits there they may not bring it back and that my friends would be a real shame!
Plus it happened to be on sale (hehehehe). Oh and I am hoping that if they notice the sale that other colors may be ordered. Actually all kidding aside I need the colors as I have plans for them and not much time to dye my own at the present (I know what a good excuse!). I am and was one really happy lady. That night I came home and had decided that I was going to work on things. My man friend was going to come over but we both decided that staying in and not getting out on the roads was the best thing to do and we would see each other the next day. So there I was sitting in my bed propped up by a mound of pillows surrounded by all my new thread and me fast asleep as the ball dropped in Times Square. ; - )Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-33485880434182083292009-10-10T12:50:00.007-05:002009-10-10T14:34:23.459-05:00More Metal and LaceI am really loving this technique! I found some other items to cover with double knots! Here is a metal disk I made into a slide. Done in DMC metallic thread (the spool kind) a fresh water pearl and tiny silver beads.

In the previous post I showed you the tiny heart that I made into an earring. In the same package came two more hearts medium and large. Here is what I did with the large one, another slide, made with the metallic and tiny beads. I think I may add some crystals or even a pearl for the next one. Sometimes you have to work through these to get the covering right and the balance of the rings before you can add extra. Not bad for a first try especially with the metallic which I love but can be quite troublesome when working with it.

I've seen that Plaid has some other metal pieces that may work with this technique so I'm off to tat for the day!

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-43726051840356566072009-09-23T18:14:00.003-05:002009-09-23T18:29:08.925-05:00Metal and Lace

Whether it is a jump ring or a fancy wire heart like this one, you can make wonderful earrings using a technique that goes back to wrapping thread on rings to make shade pulls from the 20's. I had been working with regular jump rings and metallic thread with much success. I found these little heart wires (completely solid all the way around! : ) and thought it would make a very nice earring set. These hearts come in three sizes, this being the smallest. I've been in search of other shapes as well and with all the chains and links out there for jewelry making these days you are bound to find treasures. Thanks to Krystle and Jon (25 motif) for their inspiration in modernizing an old technique!

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-62761762747610785592009-09-13T17:51:00.002-05:002009-09-13T18:36:50.187-05:00Working on new things....No, there are no pics again. I know I so bad at this part but I was cruising around the blogs today and found Yarnplayer (Marilee) had posted a new pattern for earrings, so this morning I like them so much I sat down and made a pair looking at the picture online. All I can say is beautiful. If you visit her blog they are the "Key earrings".
Yesterday I went by our new Joann super store and was looking for some very fine thread for a pair of celtic knot earrings I want to do but I am not happy with the size they keep coming out. I tried 30 and 80 but still a bit too big. So while at Joann's I happened upon heavy duty Gutermann thread. It has a nice finish to it and slides very easily. I was a bit skeptical because I've tried using thread like this before and have not been happy with the results. I got it home and wondered if it would be too small. But I tatted it up and the only draw back was that I chose black but otherwise they came out the right size! I think they are probably 100 weight. They are sort of stiff so I need to see what the iron will do to the thread. I hope it won't melt it! I'll have to put a cloth between and hope and pray!

Later that day went with my Dad to the Richmond Metro Zoo. Now you have to understand it is not a zoo like the one in DC or any other big city. But it happens to be right down the road (like 5 mins) from where I live and I have never been there. It is a privately owned zoo so there is an entrance fee of 10.75 plus food for the animals. Well, not having been there before and not knowing what I was about to see I thought hmmm $10.75??? All I can say is wow I would have paid more! This zoo and the people who own it are something else!
They have every kind of animal you can imagine except for an elephant. They have white tigers! Orangutans (he was beautiful) Galapagos turtles (you have no idea how big they are until you see them in person) penguins (too funny!), many more and too much to list here but the most wonderful thing, I got to feed and pet a giraffe. He was so majestic. Very clean and, he/she not sure which, had manners not to slime me with its tongue while eating the entire cup of food I had! BTW they have extremely long tongues and they are strong. It seemed to enjoy being pet and was so soft. I never thought in my life I would get to pet one. I had seen a documentary online about a giraffe being set free into the wild, starring the lady from Absolutely Fabulous (English comedy) and ever since I have been in love with giraffes. They are the most wonderful animals. They have (I think) 5 of them. But one was a baby so he was not in with the rest. Not tall enough yet to reach the area where you can feed them but it was very friendly when you went by its fence. Well all I can say is WOW you just had to be there! I could just sit out there with them all day !Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-82798835164011603882009-08-17T17:00:00.002-05:002009-08-17T17:22:03.036-05:00HDT Earrings I know can you believe it? I finally posted some thing on this blog! Actually I have been working on quite a few things but I never get the time to take pictures. Lately I have been experimenting with Procion dyes. Wonderful product! The Ben Franklin is the only store here that sells it and they have decided to no longer carry it. What a bummer! I need a couple of other colors (like black) so if anyone knows how to get a hold of some, please let me know. I've created quite a few colorways that have turned out well and I am experimenting constantly. Now I know why people are hooked. The earrings above are one of the colorways. This one goes from a dark green to light green to light blue to dark blue.
I've also been working on some jewelry using wire frames and jump rings, covering them with the double stitch and rings. Need to take photos of these but they are done in silver metallic so I need to figure out how to get the detail and not the shine from the thread so more to come soon!Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-7052450810361662172009-03-01T14:41:00.006-05:002009-03-08T09:37:40.893-05:00Shuttle CollectionSorry these are not in order as you read them but I could not get Blogger to take more than one picture at a time. You might want to start at the beginning(at the bottom) or at the top which ever you prefer.
Finally the last one or the first one depending on how you choose to read this blog! (LOL)
These shuttles are very unique. They are all hand made by unknown artist (everyday people). Some are treenware. This type of wood was used to make quite a few souvenir sewing tools. These however are very rugged and were probably made by the tatter or their husband. In the centers you can see carving marks. These have a really great patina to them as well.
The shuttle on the top left is made of some kind of horn. It has square nails that hold it together and the points don't touch. It is more like a knotting shuttle. I think this one is extremely old. Unfortunately some insects got to it and began eating the center through. This was before I owned it. It has been cleaned of its mites and is now doing much better. The very large shuttle on the bottom is interesting as well. It is held together by three nails (very old nails) and its center is a hand carved post but when they put it together they didn't quite place the post in the very center which made the shuttle wobble. They added a third nail to fix it so when you look in you see the post and this nail. I don't know why but everytime I look at it I think yep that would have happened to me to if I made one. I think this shuttle must have been loved because you can feel where the person held it and you can see the worn places. It's really something else.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-88735304469338368302009-03-01T14:32:00.004-05:002009-03-08T09:38:11.676-05:00Shuttle CollectionOk we are winding down here I promise!

The next group are sterling shuttles. These are from the late 1800's but mostly 1900's. One to note is the shuttle on the left (top row). This one is a bob-o-link shuttle from 1915. I point this one out because believe it or not the top and bottom separate into two pieces. This was something new at the time. It was advertised as an easy winding bobbin shuttle.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-73520378315423086532009-03-01T14:22:00.005-05:002009-03-08T09:38:28.976-05:00Shuttle CollectionThe next group of shuttles were made in England in the 1800's. English shuttles are very narrow. The red one is dyed with a red stain. Sometimes you can find green but these are extremely rare. The shuttle next to it is horn that has been ground down and then formed back into a shape of a shuttle. It was then inlaid with mother of pearl flowers. This one I think is my most favorite, because one it is so beautiful but more importantly two it was given to me by my wonderful man (my luv)! He surprised me with it last Christmas. What a surprise huh? The other two shuttles are very narrow, one bone the other is horn.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-16770818066458018102009-03-01T14:12:00.003-05:002009-03-01T14:21:29.068-05:00Shuttle CollectionHere are a collection bone and ivory shuttles. These are various ages. Many of these have a great patina to them. I am not doing them justice with my descriptions here as I am too lazy to get out the shuttle books and wanted to post them as soon as I could. The large one at the top, center is ivory and came in a set with an ivory silk winder, 2 thread barrels a couple of winders. It has a wonderful feel to it and is a large shuttle.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-33089350465492982242009-03-01T13:57:00.002-05:002009-03-01T14:11:41.388-05:00Shuttle Collection
Next are some very interesting shuttles. The top shuttle is also from Canton China but it is a smaller version with not very much carving. I believe this one to be from the 1700's as well.

The bone shuttle in the center is also from China but the center is wide enough for it to be wound with a decent amount of thread. This probably younger than 1700's for this reason. I found this one when I was out at an antique show and it was in with some other bone items (that is what they sold) and let's just say they didn't know what they had. Yippeeeee for me!
The bottom shuttle was made around 1868. It has a brass bobbin in the center and originally had a bone and brass crank winder that attached to the center hole to crank the thread onto the bobbin. You can see a full version in Heidi Nakayama's book. Wish I had the crank! I found this shuttle at an antique show and I when I saw it I thought " What a strange shuttle. How do you get the thread on it maybe slide out the bobbin?" I brought it home and searched through my shuttle books and I am surprised they didn't hear the exclamations of joy on the other side of the world when I saw the picture in Heidi's book.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8765423487443096178.post-49880941552918562522009-03-01T13:40:00.005-05:002009-03-01T13:57:12.723-05:00Shuttle CollectionI've been collecting shuttles for about as long as I have tatted. My Dad was testing his new camera and what an opportunity to get him to photograph them! Here are a few of my favorites. Quite a few of these are very old.
Here is a shot of three knotting shuttles. These are quite large. The two mother of pearl shuttles are dated to about the late 1700's to early 1800's.
The shuttle in the middle was made in 1700's in Canton China for a ladies work box. These shuttles are notorious for not having much room for thread. Some say this was because they didn't actual know the purpose of the shuttle but rather focused on the intricate carving.

Dawn Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08372164911906020041noreply@blogger.com2
